Mr. Bliss - Tolkien Gateway

The instructors of Mr. Bliss at these normals all speak in the highest terms of his unusual intelligence and remarkable proficiency. Dr. Root said that some time in 1863, he received a letter from Mr. Bliss that interested them very much:He is the fifth skin that has a hand or arm replaced with a weapon, with the first being Robby, the second being Mr. P, the third being Budgey, and the fourth being Raze. When Skulduggery and Stephanie go to Grimwood House to look for the entrance to the Caves, Serpine arrives with four Hollow Men. Serpine incapacitates Skulduggery and sends a Hollow Man after Stephanie. She defeats the Hollow Man by throwing them out of a window, but by then Serpine has left with Skulduggery. The Twins skin experiences something similar, with both twin models standing stiffly while doing an emote. Publication covered in the weekly Times Educational Supplement of 24 September 1982, reported in Amon Hen (the bulletin of The Tolkien Society) no. 59 (December 1982) p. 14 Jessica Yates

His magical discipline is Energy-Throwing, and his energy streams are powerful enough to resist a shadow blast from Lord Vile for a short period of time. Blasts from Serpine's left hand are purple, their 'natural' colour, while blasts from his right hand are red. It's a very haphazard, convoluted tale. I got the feeling ole J.R.R. made it up for the kiddies one night, then attempted to write it down from memory a few days later. It's worth a look, but not highly recommended.

Due to the Journal Entry for Season 3, it's possible that Mr. Bliss is canon as it likely talks about him.The story line was inspired by Tolkien's own vehicular mishaps with his first automobile. The bears were based on toy bears that were owned by Tolkien's sons. Tolkien was both author and illustrator of the book. His narrative binds the story and illustrations tightly together, as the text often comments directly on the pictures. Despite not being published during Tolkien's lifetime, he submitted the book to his publishers as a balm to readers who were hungry for more from Tolkien after the success of The Hobbit. The lavish ink and colored pencil illustrations would have made production costs prohibitively expensive so Tolkien agreed to redraw the pictures in a simpler style, although that never came to happen. Tolkien wrote — and in my version lettered and illustrated (!) — this book for his own children. And it’s hilarious and goofy at times, but in a way that the imagination of children and grandparents alone can most appreciate. The book doesn’t stop to explain how Girrabits exist or why one of the brothers is insanely fat. Such things just are. Partial to Bitcoin? Root, in speaking of Mr. Bliss, says: “If ever a man seemed fashioned by the Divine hand for special and exalted work, that man was P. P. Bliss. He had a splendid physique, a handsome face, and a dignified, striking presence. . . . He had not had opportunities for large intellectual culture, but his natural mental gifts were wonderful. His faculty for seizing upon the salient features of whatever came under his notice amounted to an unerring instinct. The one kernel of wheat in a bushel of chaff was the first thing he saw. Examine the work which really enlisted his whole soul, and you will see nothing but keen discernment, rare taste, and great verbal facility. His gospel hymns contain no pointless verses, awkward rhythms or forced rhymes, but, on the contrary, they glow with all that gives life to such composition. He also had a natural instinct for melody. Mr. Bliss’ voice was always a marvel to me. He used occasionally to come to my room, requesting that I would look into his vocalization with a view to suggestions. At first a few suggestions were made, but latterly I could do nothing but admire. Beginning with D-flat below (F-clef), he would, without apparent effort, produce a series of clarion tones, in an ascending series, until having reached G space above (C-clef) with pure tone.” It's a beautifully illustrated and quirky children's book, the pictures drawn by Tolkien himself. Not just a great writer but a talented artist also! In London Mr. Bliss approaches Tanith Low on Westminster Bridge, where she is killing a troll. He tells her that Serpine is going to break the truce, and that he wants her to help him prevent war breaking out. She agrees and he tells her to go to Ireland. Serpine is best known for his skinless red right hand, however, which uses a Necromantic technique to kill any living or undead creature through agonising pain, simply by pointing at them. Visually, this takes the appearance of red vapour. The only known survivor of this is Skulduggery Pleasant, and this is only due to Auron Tenebrae influencing Serpine's magic to guarantee Skulduggery's survival. The Serpine of the Leibniz Universe refines this technique further, so that it also strips the flesh from the part of the victim that he points at. The red right hand is limited, however, in that its victims must be within range.
