About this deal

Ideal for use on bikes, boats, or on foot, the new Garmin eTrex 22X is a waterproof and durable GPS unit; resistant to dust, dirt, humidity and the weather. Alternatively, view accessories for all Garmin eTrex models, including accessory and parts for the very latest. Garmin TopoActive Western Europe covers the following 23 countries: Andorra, Austria, Belgium, Denmark, Finland, France, Germany, Iceland, Ireland, Italy, Liechtenstein, Luxembourg, Malta, Monaco, Netherlands, Norway, Portugal, San Marino, Spain, Sweden, Switzerland, United Kingdom, Vatican City. It’s very hard to keep electronics charged when riding 20 hours a day, charging bike lights and an InReach Mini, AND a smartphone being used for navigation. The middle of the road model in the eTrex series enables map navigation on an accurate colour screen.

Use the auto mount capability and City Navigator® NT maps for turn-by-turn driving directions, or use the rugged mount for your motorcycle or quad bike. The eTrex 22x and 32x handheld devices come preloaded with road-routable TopoActive Europe maps that feature streets and trails so you can take the journey off the grid. The eTrex 22x (along with its higher-end cousin, the 32x) is a rugged “handheld” GPS navigation device designed for hikers, bikers, and others who explore by road or trail. This wouldn’t be so bad except the cable is “mini USB,” otherwise known as “the old weird USB,” and I don’t have any other devices that use this cable.

Explore the terrain:- The eTrex 22x handheld devices come preloaded with road-routable TopoActive Europe maps that feature streets and trails so you can take the journey off the grid. Here’s the handlebar mount I use; there are several others available that look like the same design. The eTrex focuses on backcountry adventure and lacks cycling performance features like power meter integration and structured workout support. The rugged and durable Garmin eTrex 22x provides navigation, topographic maps, and GPS tracking in the backcountry.

It’s my own darn fault, but I managed to scratch the screen on my eTrex within the first few days of using it. The eTrex uses an uncommon mini USB port for data transfer, which means another cable to keep track of. I’d been thinking about getting a dedicated GPS nav device for awhile (see next section) and the eTrex 22x seemed like the cheapest way to take the plunge. TopoActive Europe maps provide routable roads, waterways and trails, making the Garmin eTrex 22x perfect for quad bikes, bicycles, boats or hiking. Actually getting lost can suck, like when you run out of water or ride an extra 40 miles with no food or end up stuck on a busy highway with no shoulder.Parts available include; Garmin eTrex 10/20/30 carrying case, retractable lanyard, vehicle mount kit and adjustable dash mount. If the eTrex 32x looks similar to the old eTrex 30 that came out in 2011, it's because the case is the same (as far as I can tell). The eTrex 22X can also accept GPX files allowing for paper-free geocaching - no more manually entering coordinates and scribbling down notes, just upload the file and start hunting for caches! This product is a sophisticated electronic device which requires that you read, understand, and act upon the information given in the instruction manual (usually available via the above 'manual' link). You can think of routes as a direction from point A to B, just like when you use something like Google Maps.

Could the 32x be a worthwhile upgrade that keeps all the features I like about the 22x (durability, battery life, satellite connectivity, maps, etc) and adds support for elevation plots? In this regard the eTrex does its job so well that I don’t even think about it, which is how you know it’s working smoothly.
