About this deal

Isaac had a lot in common with me (fear of bridges over water, couldn't even highlight his textbooks because it was marring them, sf geek in addition to the fantasy) which made me relate to him better. When he's not writing, reading, reviewing, or teaching, he can usually be found with his wife and son on the frisbee golf course or the ultimate frisbee field. Which sounds interesting enough, except mostly, our hero pulls out guns or swords or, at a stretch, healing potions. Jim invited me to send a few autographed copies of the Obloeron series to his Christmas Book Drive for a battered women's shelter in his native Michigan a few years back, and I didn't hesitate. a hyper-dense, info-dumpy start turned out not to be much of an impediment to my enjoyment at all; this thing went up like a rocket, and never came back down.

When Matthew Swift in Kate Griffin’s urban sorcerer novels conjures up a powerful spell from the fine print on the back of an Underground ticket, it feels as if the world slips sideways for a minute; as if words and symbols do have meaning, and we don’t always know what all those meanings are. His latest novel is Terminal Peace, book three in the humorous science fiction Janitors of the Post-Apocalypse trilogy. Gutenberg’s power brought him many enemies, and some of those enemies have waited centuries for revenge.Gargle Blaster: One of the things that libriomancers do for fun is extract fictional drinks from books. Now it is up to Isaac, Lena and Isaac's pet fire spider Smudge to save the world from an all-out magical war, save Nidhi Shah before she is killed or turned and to find out just what the hell Gutenberg is up to. And when he doesn’t identify the source, he allows us the opportunity to play “I Can Name that Book in . In our crazy, ranking-obsessed world, it is sometimes hard to remember that those three stars up there are not absolute, but a loose representation or summation of many different factors, and that three stars here and three stars there does not necessarily mean that all of those factors line up. Isaac Vainio is a Libriomancer, a member of the secret organization founded five centuries ago by Johannes Gutenberg.

Still alive five hundred years later (he pulled the Holy Grail from the Bibles he printed), he hasn't been seen since the trouble with the vampires started.

BOOK THREE BLURB—Unbound (Jan 6, 2015) : For five hundred years, the Porters have concealed the existence of magic from the world. But now, imagine that said magic was literal, and that you could actually reach into a book and pluck out an object if your imagination was strong enough. You can't pull out a reality warping wand from a book that only has ever had a few thousand readers. If they want to sneak into a building, they can pull an invisibility cloak from a Harry Potter book. Hines is now out with a new series, MAGIC EX LIBRIS, and judging by its introductory novel Libriomancer , this is going to be another winner.

The jacket design reflects the story well – a space age blaster used in a library of ancient tomes by a handsome young boffin in a duster coat hits the tone spot on. When you extract an object from a book you are really pulling on the collective power and belief of all of the people who have also read that book. One character is a fire spider, written to be helpful and loyal, who has settled into being our main character's pet, sidekick and watch dog and who has developed a personality of his own.Hines manages to keep the story moving while squeezing in a powerful amount of exposition and backstory.
