About this deal

The premise Joan He lays out in Descendant of the Crane isn't shockingly original, but the relatively familiar contours of the plot do not make it any less elaborate. Przede wszystkim - takie dziury fabularne, że nic tylko zbierać je z podłogi i samemu sklejać bo autorce niestety się do tego nie spieszyło. Deep world-building, magical family secrets, and intricate palace politics - Descendant of the Crane soars from page one. Even though she didn't always make the right decisions and she had many misconceptions about her kingdom, it was admirable how she believed in herself and had the courage to pursue the things she thought were right.

His inclusion in the story scarcely makes sense, and Akira quickly loses the thin, undefinable edge that made him interesting to begin with. Most of them came to me out of discomfort, and so based on their questions I’d tell them what they wanted to hear because I figured I’d assuage worries wherever I can. Descendant of the Crane, however, maintains a momentum that only continues to build and ends with a resolution that feels more like a rubber band that really should have snapped but is still somehow defying physics and in tact. Fantasy books following the inner-workings of the royal court and with society's ruling members as their central characters are my favourite to read about. It was extremely smart and I would like to read more fantasy mystery books if there is such a thing! A gripping tale full of intrigue, unpredictable twists, and betrayal—this is the Chinese fantasy readers have been waiting for. There are four ministries if I’m not wrong, a secretariat (or more; I might have missed details about this part) and a grand advisor, all of which work with the king/queen.

It's everything I love in Chinese dramas (sprawling families, complex relationships, double-meanings, betrayal-for-your-own-good, gray morality) minus all the "meh" bits (girl on girl hate, harems competing against each other). But I do hope it covers everything, and, if it doesn't give you comfort, I hope it at least paints the full picture I think readers deserve. in a perfect world, where I would have been able to get a 3 book contract from the get-go, I envisioned book 2 following a new character X Sanjing, and book 3 following a new character X Caiyan, all to complete the arc that's much bigger than Hesina's personal story (one of finding the truth of who killed her dad, and thereby also finding the truth of herself and dismantling the lies she grew up on). But doing so would then make me uncomfortable, and after sitting down with myself to examine why, I realized it goes against what I believe is the magic of reading—and of art in general.

The court is not some simple engine that applying pressure here, pressure there, could propel in the direction of her wishes.

By the end, her antagonists’ villainy illuminates the morality of each character, and the reader is still a long way from sundering villain from hero. Coronada como Reina (lo cual ya es raro porque esto es un setting completamente chino), Hesina decide acudir a una persona que usa magia prohibida en el reino para entender si la muerte de su padre fue natural. I really wish Joan He had stuck with the initial theme (that Hesina didn't really want a love interest for she wished to only trust herself for a time) and left it to our imaginations because it made a book which had very adult themes suddenly feel quite immature - the audience placement here is really confused between YA and adult fantasy because of that. It seems I haven't read the same book as everyone else, but I'm still glad some people are enjoying this.

It made me want to poke at him until he gives me something more, something more exciting, something—at the very least—worth rooting for. jeśli to by była pierwsza w życiu książka z tego gatunku, odebrałabym ją odrobinę lepiej, ale na tym etapie mojego czytelniczego życia, mogę powiedzieć tylko jedno - strata czasu.
