Lay your decorative gravel over the sub-base to a depth of approximately 25mm and rake it until smooth. Ideally, this should leave a distance of about 25mm to the top of the edging and prevent any gravel from spilling over to your garden.

You can also use cast concrete edging which need to be laid onto a bed of mortar. If you are using concrete edging, you might need to dig the edges of the path slightly deeper to allow for the mortar. Make sure the edging is held upright whilst the mortar sets. Once the stones look good, you tamp soil behind the cobbles and fill the path with additional gravel until just a couple of inches of the stone project above the ground. For stability, the cobbles must be buried to approximately three-quarters of their depth.
