About this deal

If you’re looking to install an outdoor ethernet cable, there are several things that you need to consider. First, you need to ensure that you have chosen the best ethernet cable for your needs. If your cable is not weatherproofed and able to stand up to the elements, you risk damaging your internet network.

If you do come across a wet ethernet cable, you really have two choices: leave it unplugged whilst it is left to dry out naturally or simply replace the cable. Some additional equipment is needed for installation, with most being available at a low cost. The end of the ethernet cable must be terminated and we recommend using wall boxes at each end of the connection. A wall box allows for a separate ethernet cable to be connected and keeps the installation tidy. We know how it is. Even with all the expert advice in the world, there is still a daunting amount of choice when it comes to selecting your new ethernet cable. To make things even easier for you, the expert team at The Wifi Specialist has compiled a list of our favourite ethernet cables for a variety of categories and purposes. A question that often comes up is “should I use only shielded cable outside”? The short answer is no. The longer answer is “it depends on the environment”. The purpose of cable shielding is to ward off EMI/RFI or ESD. The shielding, usually in the form of foil referred to as FTP (Foil Twisted Pair), will be accompanied by a ESD ground/drain wire as well. Generally, I recommend using unshielded cabling unless there is a valid need for shielded, such as when burying the cable within 8” of electrical wire on parallel runs. The other primary reason to use shielded is for ESD (Electrostatic Discharge) drain off such as when running outdoor Ethernet cable above ground in structure-to-structure scenarios. ESD build up occurs with dry air movement across cabling, and could ruin your network equipment if not allowed to discharge to ground. If the cable is going to be secured to the exterior of a building to connect to an IP camera, for instance, you’ll want an exterior-grade Ethernet cable that’s UV resistant and coated with PVC or LLDPE to protect it from sun, rain, and large temperature variations.

However, the 50 feet maximum length makes this cable unsuitable for larger properties and many office and business internet connections. Although, by offering internet speeds of 1 Gbps and a 250 MHz frequency, this cable will provide a solid and dependable connection. You also will not have to worry about connection disruptions with built-in UTP shielding. Best Cat7 ethernet cable: Veetop Flat Cat7 While armoured cabling is essential for electricity supplies, it’s generally not used for ethernet connections at home. The steel wiring can make the cable difficult to work with and hard to terminate at either end. A professional installation is often required when using armoured cabling.

Out of these two choices, I would always recommend going for the exterior-grade cable whenever you plan on running an ethernet cable outside, regardless of how far the cable needs to be run. If an indoor-rated cable is left outside and gets wet because of the rain, it may well be fine and remain usable, although considering how affordable ethernet cables are, it is probably worth just replacing it. A wired internet connection is the best way to achieve fast and consistent performance inside a garden building. The best outdoor ethernet cables provide gigabit speeds for outbuildings where reliably extending Wi-Fi is not possible.

The best Ethernet cables to buy

That being said, I would still recommend using the exterior-grade cable over the interior-grade cable and conduit combination. Depending on the weather conditions you receive, it may be worth using a conduit even alongside the exterior-grade cable.

Even if the water somehow gets inside an ethernet cable, there is a low risk of it becoming a hazard, although there is a very high chance that it will be damaged and you will more than likely see some signal degradation, if it works at all. Ok, so why do we offer unshielded? This cable type can be used in direct burial scenarios where electrical runs underground are not close by. The dirt itself will ground out your data cable. If you are certain of your environment, you may also use unshielded direct burial cable if it is attached to a single structure only (like along the siding or under the soffit of a house). ESD build-up and resultant equipment damage is a possibility, but a remote one.Ordinary and direct burial Cat 6 cables can attract lightning strikes to some extent, and burying the cable alone may not mitigate that risk. To fortify your outdoor ethernet network against lightning strikes and protect indoor equipment, it is advisable to install surge protectors as an integral part of your setup. This precautionary measure will help safeguard your network and valuable devices during adverse weather conditions. Step 1: Choosing A Cable Those looking to really future proof their network might want to look at the newer Cat 8 standard, which supports speeds of up to 40Gbits/sec at distances of up to 30m using the same RJ45 connectors as Cat 6a. Predictably, though, it’s expensive and mostly used in data centres to hook up the most demanding high-performance network kit. Which category do you need? By trusting The Wifi Specialist for your outdoor ethernet cable installation, we will ease any stress or hassle by communicating with your utility company on your behalf. Once you understand what is beneath the surface of your outdoor space, you can dig a path from your home to your outdoor area. Step 4: Run The Cable To The Desired Area You also need to ensure that your cable is fast enough for your requirements. If you upgrade your devices and your outdoor ethernet cables are not powerful enough to meet the demand, you will have to pay the cost of digging up your cables and starting again with a more effective cable. If you live in a particular cold part of the world, a valid concern you may is whether the cold weather can affect ethernet cable; even those that are exterior-grade and designed specifically for outdoor use.
