About this deal

The OnePlus 8 Pro (with 12GB of RAM) recorded an average multi-core benchmark score of 3305 on Geekbench 5.1, which puts it comfortably above the OnePlus 7T Pro's average of 2564 and even sees it beat the Samsung Galaxy S20 Plus, which managed 3,034. OnePlus has been making inroads into the US market, and the OnePlus 8 will be available on the new T-Mobile (which includes Sprint) – and, for the first time, on Verizon. With the carrier field having been reduced after T-Mobile’s merger with Sprint, the OnePlus 8’s unavailability on AT&T is less of a blow. Fast and Smooth OxygenOS is smart, swift and efficient with intuitive features designed with you in mind. Our focus on your experience ensures your OnePlus smartphone excels at the things you really need, bringing standout features to your fingertips. We tested the model with 12GB of RAM, and it scored 3,401 on Geekbench 5, just edging out Samsung Galaxy S20 Ultra’s score of 3,300. Curiously, it also edges out the OnePlus 8 Pro, which returned an average score of 3,159 in our tests.

The Warp Charge 65 charger maintains the compatibility for Warp Charge 30T, Warp Charge 30, Dash Charge and also up to 45W PD charging. Actual performance may vary with different devices and software versions. This may seem disappointing initially, but the OnePlus 8 Pro captured the most true-to-life colors. While the 7T Pro and S20 Plus capture bolder, eye-catching colors, it’s not representative of what we could see out of the window. Vibrant color effect pro' optimizes the colors and contrast in videos to provide a more vibrant picture, which is noticeable in especially colorful shows and films, and will please those who like a little more 'pop' from their picture. This is paired with either 8GB or 12GB of LPDDR5 RAM (depending on whether you opt for 128GB or 256GB of internal storage), which ensures that the OnePlus 8 Pro can handle anything you throw at it, from lengthy Fortnite and PUBG campaigns to box-set binges and movie marathons.

The OnePlus 8 shoots video at a maximum of 4K and 60fps, with slow-mo at 720p at 480fps or 1080p at 240fps. Super Stable mode does as it claims, smoothing out juddery footage effectively – a feature better suited for active videographers or for recording while moving.

While the IMX789 sensor is 1/1.35" in size with 16:11 aspect ratio, different sensor areas are used based on specific user scenarios – with the effective sensor area up to 1/1.43" when taking photographs. Our review unit was the 12GB+256GB configuration, and we found the system took up around 20GB of that space, which means you'll have around 236GB of usable storage, and around 108GB in the 128GB model. If you find yourself running out of space you can make use of cloud storage, for example Google Photos, which enables you to upload all your pictures and videos to the cloud for free. As phones get ever heavier, the OnePlus 8’s 180g feels well-balanced – the only 2020 flagship that’s noticeably lighter is the 163g Samsung Galaxy S20, which is also smaller. Most others are heftier by degrees, like the 186g Galaxy S20 Plus and 196g Galaxy Note 10 Plus, all the way up to the 226g iPhone 11 Pro Max. There's a full dark mode too (listed under 'Tone' in the settings), for those of you who like the aesthetic, and its availability extends to all of OnePlus' pre-installed apps, including the dialler, messages, camera, gallery and files.

OnePlus' 2020 flagship

The OnePlus 8 Pro was announced on April 14, 2020, and the phone is now on sale in the US and UK. We're still not clear whether the OnePlus 8 Pro will be released in Australia. In a statement, OnePlus told us: "We are working hard to set up a seamless experience for our fans before we go on sale in Australia". Our review unit came in Glacial Green, and along with the Ultramarine Blue option, it boasts a matte-frosted Gorilla Glass on the rear, which is smooth and inviting to the touch. The benefits of a higher refresh rate include smooth scrolling in apps, and better graphical fluidity in games, which overall provide a more premium experience. Of course, that won’t be an issue if you opt to slip the OnePlus 8 Pro into the translucent silicone case that’s included in the box. This detracts from the premium aesthetic, as any generic case does, but you can at least still see the fetching green color – and it provides protection for the sizable camera bump protrusion. It’s not the highest-resolution display, losing out to the Samsung Galaxy S20 line’s WQHD+ screens. In theory, this means you won’t have as sharp a picture, although that would only be the case when watching high-resolution media anyway.

You can now buy the OnePlus 8 in the US and UK as the phone went on sale in April 2020. We're still not clear whether the OnePlus 8 will be released in Australia. In a statement OnePlus told us: "We are working hard to set up a seamless experience for our fans before we go on sale in Australia". At the maximum zoom level, image detail gets pretty grainy as the phone is relying on a digital zoom and software smarts to produce the image. The 7T Pro maxed out at 10x, so our final comparison is between the OnePlus 8 Pro and S20 Plus. IP68: Data is based on test results using TÜV SÜD based on IEC 60529 with test conditions for submersion in up to 1.5 meters of freshwater for up to 30 minutes. It is not advised to use the product in seawater, at the beach, or the pool. Water and dust resistance may be reduced as device ages. Liquid and dust damage are not covered under warranty. For the first time here, OnePlus has included wireless charging in one of its handsets. The technology is called Warp Charge 30 Wireless, and it takes you from 1% to 50% in 30 minutes – the only caveat is that you need to use the OnePlus Warp Charge 30 wireless charging pad to achieve these super wire-free speeds. Thankfully, the OnePlus 8’s 16MP f/2.2 ultra-wide lens is far more useful. Its 116-degree field of view is great for outdoor shots, and even better for indoor ones, although it’s no more remarkable than similar lenses on other phones. The OnePlus 8 is a more iterative take on its predecessor, the OnePlus 7T, but it includes enough improvements to make it a serious affordable flagship handset – and in some ways, the new OnePlus phone has less competition given that the Samsung Galaxy S20 line doesn’t have its own lower-priced equivalent. The OnePlus 8 comes with a Warp Charge 30T charger, which was an impressive development that debuted in the box with the OnePlus 7T, delivering 23% faster charging than the charger that came with prior OnePlus phones. Both of these settings are turned off by default, so if you're not a fan of how they adapt your viewing experience it's easy enough to leave them off. It feels more tactile than the glass on the rear of the Galaxy S20 Plus and iPhone 11 Pro, and enhances the feel of the phone in the hand. It doesn’t provide much in the way of grip though, and the 8 Pro can be a little slippy. We can see from the sample images that the OnePlus 8 Pro captures consistently good detail at all zoom ranges versus the other phones, but shots don’t appear as colorful as the Samsung or even its predecessor.

The 8 Pro is certainly capable of room-filling sound, and you can comfortably listen to music or watch a video with the volume up high without much in the way of distortion. Still, pairing the handset with a speaker or a decent set of headphones will provide better audio quality. It’s a different story with the OnePlus 8 Pro, which has a 3x optical zoom that pushes its digital zoom out to 30x, as on the Samsung Galaxy S20 and S20 Plus. In our brief and social distance-compliant testing, we found that flagships with any optical zoom – even the 2x telephoto on the iPhone 11 Pro Max – took sharper distance photos than the OnePlus 8.The 16MP front-facing shooter is functional and sharp, though it tends toward a warmish yellow/orange tint. Shots are detailed, but it also tends to overexpose subjects slightly, so expect to capture images with more brightness and less shadow. Camera samples This works well enough for the OnePlus 8 at low settings, but we wouldn’t advise using it beyond 2x or 3x. Shots taken at the maximum 10x digital zoom are blurry – not something you’d ever share. We have seen handsets bring greater zoom levels than this - such as the 100x zoom on the Galaxy S20 Ultra - but OnePlus claims its audience isn’t asking for anything greater than 30x, for now.
