A distiller named Elijah Pepper began producing small amounts of whiskey in 1797 in his little set-up, just behind the Woodford County Courthouse in Versailles, Kentucky. Uniquely matured in separate, charred oak barrels – the second barrel deeply toasted before a light charring – extracts addit. Unlike a typical 100% malt whiskey, Woodford Reserve is a Kentucky Straight Malt Whiskey crafted from 51% malt and aged in new charred oak barrels, making it the malt whiskey for bourbon drinkers.

For those who aren’t avid bourbon drinkers, Woodford Reserve is certainly a fantastic introduction to the spirit. Clean, brilliant honey amber in colour with heavy rich dried fruit, hints of mint and oranges covered with a dusting of cocoa on the nose. In 2014, it earned a gold medal in the Whiskies of the World Awards, and in 1999 in the International Spirits Challenge, it won the award for Best in Class, Bourbon.

An innovative approach to twice-barreled bourbon creates the rich and colorful flavor of Woodford Reserve Double Oaked. It is triple distilled, not only does this offer a smooth taste but Woodford distills their whiskey batches in both pot stills and column stills to enhance the flavour, just one of the many steps that help to create a perfect balance. This expression begins life being aged in the same way as the classic Woodford Reserve, but following this, it is further matured in barrels which have been heavily toasted and lightly charred. I have quite a collection of Malt Whiskies and love them but this was a fascinating introduction to decent Bourbon.Aroma: Dusky notes of roasted malt, toasted nuts all sweetened with hints of milk chocolate and brightened with a touch of orange zest, spearmint and warm baking spices. I enjoyed it a lot and will consider it over time and explore its complexity in more detail over time.
